Kamloops Public Market Cooperative Co-op Cafe Series: Indigenous Co-ops
Daphane Nelson with the Kamloops Public Market Cooperative will host this online Co-op Cafe in collaboration with Cooperatives First and the BC Cooperative Association. Participants will learn how people have joined forces to create a solution to their common need, utilizing the cooperative model in the process. On the last Wednesday of the month, we will explore a different topic. In May, Trista Pewapisconias will walk us through Indigenous Cooperatives.
The first Indigenous-owned co-operative business only appeared in 1945 as a way for the Peter Ballantyne fishers at Kinoosao to collaborate. Since then, there have been over 130 co-ops created to serve Indigenous peoples across Canada. In this presentation, Trista will give a historical overview of Canadas Indigenous co-op sector identifying challenges entrepreneurs commonly face and new opportunities creating a renewed interest in the co-op model. Co-operatives First supports co-operative business development across western Canadas rural and Indigenous communities. BioIndigenous Relations Lead,
Trista Pewapisconias, is a member of the Little Pine First Nation in Saskatchewan. Trista works alongside community members with their co-operative projects through business development and planning. Tristas professional experience includes various marketing roles, as well as writing business plans for start-up Indigenous companies. In her free time, Trista also sits on the board of the Saskatoon Downtown Early Learning Centre and the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce of Saskatchewan.
