SEATTLE, WA - The Guild Dance Company, in collaboration with the Tudor Choir, presents el Camino, a new dance & music production inspired by the experiences of pilgrims traveling the legendary Camino de Santiago. With choreography by Alex Ung and music ranging from solemn chant to Renaissance motets and contemporary works by Arvo Pärt and Eric Whitacre, el Camino celebrates the human experience spanning centuries of journeys on the Spanish trail to Santiago de Compostela. el Camino will be performed on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, May 18 at 6:30 PM at Seattle Operas new Opera Center, 363 Mercer St. at Seattle Center, a wonderful community space that is perfect for this collaborative work.

About el Camino

The performance will open with the eight-voice Tudor Choir, directed by Doug Fullington, performing a set of a cappella Renaissance motets by Spanish and Portuguese masters, including Tomas Luis de Victoria, Francisco Guerrero, Alonso & Duarte Lobo, and Manuel Cardoso, interspersed with chant-based motets by 20th-century French composer Maurice Duruflé.

Following a brief intermission, audiences will experience the world premiere of el Camino, a 70-minute multi-media production that combines the dancing of the ten artists of the Guild Dance Company, the a cappella performance of the Tudor Choir, and projected scenic design, transporting the viewer to the Iberian Peninsula in all of its timeless beauty.

The Camino de Santiago (or, The Way of St. James) was one of the most important medieval pilgrimages and remains exceedingly popular today among people of all walks of life. (The 2010 feature film The Way chronicles one mans journey on the Camino.) Pilgrims travel the Camino for a multitude of reasons, with some seeking solitude, time for introspection, or an opportunity to grieve. Others seek discernment, peace, or personal challenge and discovery. Many come away knowing themselves more fully, having formed lasting friendships, growing in empathy and compassion, and frequently finding renewed hope, direction, and purpose.

el Camino contemplates these life-changing experiences by following a group of pilgrims through a series of episodic scenes, culminating in their arrival at the city of Santiago de Compostela. Their dance along the Camino is accompanied by the sights of the Spanish countryside and a diverse selection of music chosen to underscore the many emotions felt as they journey together.

About the Artists

Founded in 2018 by Artistic Director Alex Ung, the Guild Dance Company was created as a place for artists to collaborate and create works together, sharing stories, experiences, expressions, and memories with each other and their audiences through contemporary artistry. The Guild presents two productions each season and has also performed on the Seattle International Dance Festival. The company was in residence at the University of Washington School of Dance in December 2019 and has recently been awarded a residency by the City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Department, hosted by Xaviera Vandermay. The Guild's 2019 production of Immigration Stories, choreographed by Alex Ung and based on his family's experience immigrating from Vietnam to the United States in the 1970s was performed in Seattle at Yaw Theater and also presented at Bainbridge Performing Arts by Olympic Performance Group.

Alex Ung began his dancer career in college as a hip hop teacher and choreographer while a student at Iowa State University. Now his styles range from crew-style hip hop to contemporary jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary ballet. Alex is on summer faculty for Pacific Northwest Ballet School and is a frequent teaching artist at Seattle Children's Theatre, where he most recently choreographed Seussical Jr. He was on the faculty of Bainbridge Ballet from 20082016, where he made award-winning choreography for Bainbridge Ballet Competition Dance Team and choreographed for Olympic Performance Group. Alex has also taught at Northwest School of Dance, and Momentum Dance. On stage, he has performed with Bainbridge Performing Arts, Jerboa, Olympic Ballet Theatre, Olympic Performance Group, Pacific MusicWorks, Peaches Christ Productions, Seattle Musical Theatre, and Seattle PRIDE Mainstage, among other dance and theater companies.

Founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, the Tudor Choir is a Seattle-based vocal chamber ensemble that has been hailed as a superb choir (Gramophone), as well as a choir to watch (Fanfare). The Tudor Choir specializes in Renaissance polyphony and also has been acclaimed for its performances of early American and contemporary music. The choir has performed extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest, including concert appearances in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Portland, Oregon, and has made guest appearances with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and Early Music Guild of Seattle. The choir made its East Coast debut in December 2012, performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and in Pennsylvania. The Tudor Choir has made numerous recordings for the Loft, Gothic, and Scribe labels and recently has recorded music by Nico Muhly and Seattle-based composer Jeff Junkinsmith.

Doug Fullington is a conductor, singer and dance historian. He founded the Tudor Choir in 1993 and is a specialist in Tudor-era and early American vocal music. As a countertenor, he performed with The Tallis Scholars, the Tudor Choir, and Byrd Ensemble. As a dance historian, his writings on 19th-century ballet and the notation system of Vladimir Stepanov have been published by Oxford University Press and in Ballet Alert!, Ballet Review, Dance View, and Dancing Times. He has contributed dances revived from source material for the Bolshoi Ballet, Bavarian State Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Doug has taught on the faculty at the University of Washington School of Music, and he has been a frequent presenter and moderator for the Guggenheim Museums Works and Process series. Doug currently is Assistant to Peter Boal and Audience Education Manager at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. He is editing the first critical edition of the ballet Giselle for Barenreiter and writing a book for Oxford University Press about using nineteenth-century ballet source material, both with his colleague Marian Smith.
