Jamie Baum & Short Stories
On Sunday March 15th at 7 pm at First Presbyterian Church on Park Street, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present flutist Jamie Baum and her group Short Stories
Composer/flutist and 2014 Guggenheim Award Fellow, Jamie Baum, known for her award-winning Septet+ (of twenty years) that features her global-influenced, long-form compositions, formed a second band Short Stories with an emphasis on improvisation to complement and expand her palette. Inspired by the short but eloquent compositions by such jazz icons as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk that were influential to her development as a composer and improviser, Baum strives in this setting to compose or arrange short pieces that set the tone for this instrumentation. Invoking the excitement and drive of the modern jazz standard, Short Stories features NYCs most creative and first-call musicians.
With each short composition created to explore a particular vibe or concept, Short Stories features a core quartet with recurring guests creating a modular group and concept. For this special Charlottesville performance the band will be comprised of Jamie Baum- flutes, Jason Palmer trumpet, Andy Milne piano, Joe Martin bass, and Jeff Hirshfield drums
Short Stories has played for enthusiastic audiences at New York Citys Winter Jazzfest, Jazz Gallery, Kitano, Jazz Standard, Cornelia Street Cafe and St. Peters Jazz on The Plaza, as well as tours in the US and Canada at esteemed venues.
Looking to document the development and evolution of this music with these top-tier musicians, Baum plans to take this project into the studio in June. Their first recordings concept, to be entitled Short Stories of Struggles and Triumphs, presents compositions that each pay tribute to an iconic figure who has faced adversity and prevailed. Whether infamous or lesser known, each subject has dealt with gender, race, health and/or political strife or discrimination, and affected the path forward for both themselves and others.
The New York Times says Ms. Baum brings a remarkable balance of fluidity and restless creativity to her work as a post-bop flutist and composer.
