Developing Your Comedic Voice in Prose with Zahra Noorbakhsh (9/29 11/10)
"Funny is funny" is the greatest myth ever written about comedy. All of us have a sense of humor that is specific to context. The real question is, "Is your audience in on the joke?" How do we create comedic set-up, pacing, and timing in prose that pulls out of our readers that genuine laugh-out-loud moment? How do we walk the line between comedy and drama? How do we take a moment loaded with humor and deflate it so that it's taken more seriously? How do we know if our writing is as funny to others as it is to ourselves? This course is a series of workshops geared at honing you comedic voice and inner-editor. It's designed to provide growth for writers at all levels. You may enter the course with a piece to workshop or you may develop your piece over the course of the class. All students will leave with the fundementals and guidance to master the laugh.
