Ateneo Chamber Singers - Umawit sa Kagalakan (Sing for Joy), Berkeley
Since its inception in 2001, the Ateneo Chamber Singers has earned national and international renown for its commitment to stylistically informed and compelling renditions of sacred classical music. The ACS was one of three Asian choirs invited to perform in Polyfolia in Saint-L, France. Competing at the 38th Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain, the group garnered the top prize in the polyphony category. In collaboration with Singapores SYC Ensemble Singers and Japans Gaia Philharmonic Choir, the ACS fosters cultural exchange through joint biennial performances in Singapore, Japan and the Philippines.
The pioneering ACS members sang with the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club under the direction of Joel Navarro and Jonathan Velasco. During the 2000 and 2001 European Tours, the Glee Club earned top prizes in major choral competitions throughout Europe. Out of this successful collaboration of talents emerged the Ateneo Chamber Singers with Jonathan Velasco as Artistic Director. Having established itself as a formidable ensemble in the Philippine music landscape, the ACS embarked upon numerous concerts, several collaborative projects and has since produced two CDs to critical acclaim: Awit sa Panginoon (Praise to God) and Pagsamba (Worship). Over the years, the ACS has broadened its repertoire to include contemporary choral music.
During the Fall of 2008, the ACS will be performing in New York, Massachusetts, Indiana, Michigan and California as part of the sesquicentennial anniversary celebrations of their home institution, Ateneo de Manila University.
