DANCING THE SILK ROAD with Gulistan Dance Theater
The California Multicultural Arts Institute presents Carolyn Kruegers GULISTAN DANCE THEATER in concert! Join us in the Milking Parlor at the historic OCTAGON BARN CENTER in San Luis Obispo for DANCING THE SILK ROAD. Treat yourself to this delightful showcase of rarely-seen traditional dances from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Iran, with stops in the legendary cities of Bukhara, Samarkand, Khiva, Tashkent, Baku and Tehran. Percussionist RON WAGNER, formerly of Cirque du Soleil, will be featured on the Uzbek doira/frame drum. The concert culminates in a screening of Gulistans short fantasy film, ENCHANTED DUNE, directed by Aygul Maksutova and filmed at Oceano Dunes. A reception with light snacks will follow.
AND JUST ADDED! Guest Storyteller Marie Silva-Alexander!
Gulistans elegant and rhythmic dances, displayed in lavish costumes and enlivened by the artful use of authentic props, evoke the fabled courts and caravansarais of the historic Silk Road. Trained in the art of Central Asian dance by Artistic Director Carolyn Krueger, Gulistans multitalented ensemble includes Gigi Corkett, Jane Glaser, Nikii Henry, Aygul Maksutova, Donna Speckman and Akiko Tanikawa. Gulistan [goo-li-stahn], which means "flower garden" in several Silk Road languages, has performed in Uzbekistan, Turkey, Europe, across the U.S. and throughout California.
Specializing in the refined and nuanced dances of Uzbekistan, Gulistan has been entrusted with over a dozen choreographies by Carolyns mentor, People's Artist of Uzbekistan Viloyat Akilova. We are dedicated to the faithful presentation and preservation of traditional dances of Central Asia and seek to entertain and enlighten audiences by sharing the beauty, joy, grace and humanity inherent in these millennia-old Eastern arts.
