Dr. Kevin Hekmatpanah, cello with pianist Dr. Archie Chen will perform music featuring music by Beethoven, Schumann, Prokofiev and others at 7:00 PM on June 22, 2019 at the historic Harrington Opera House in Harrington, WA. A native of Chicago, cellist Dr. Kevin Hekmatpanah has presented hundreds of solo and chamber performances throughout the country, including concerts at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Society of the Cincinnati Artist Series in Washington D.C., the Sitka Music Festival, the Lower Makefield Performing Arts Society in Pennsylvania, the Camerata Musica Concert Series in Salem, Oregon, the Russian Chamber Music Foundation and the Kirkland Performance Center in Seattle and many more.
Outside North America, he has performed concertos in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, in Stockholm, Sweden, and at the home of Edvard Grieg in Bergen, Norway. He also appeared as soloist with the Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. He has also presented recitals in Costa Rica, Norway, and the Para XXV International Music Festival in Brazil and performed at St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna and the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Deeply committed to teaching, Mr. Hekmatpanah is a Professor of Music at Gonzaga University, where he has taught since 1994. He is currently a member of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. He has served on competition juries, and he has presented master classes and clinics throughout the country.
Archie Chen Described by the Irish Times as a pianist who performs with gorgeously full tone and daring velocity and whose playing suggests a fiery temperament with the necessary elements of technique to support it, Chinese-American pianist Dr. Archie Chen has gained international recognition for his poetic imagination, drama and virtuosic technical prowess. International Piano Magazine hails his interpretation of Alkan at the Dublin International Piano Festival as a performance that has stayed longer in the memory than anything else. Others have also described his playing as one that combines a solo virtuosos fluency and excitement with the sophistication and intelligence of an artist who thinks deeply about the music he plays. while Ralf Gothoni applauded him as A great talent, both as instrumentalist and musician a virtuoso showing a wide spectrum of deep emotions and understanding for the musical structure.
Dr. Chens performances have led him throughout the United States, Asia, the Middle East and Europe in such prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Gewandhaus, Vatican Auditorium, Benaroya Hall, National Concert Hall (Dublin) and concert halls throughout China. Archies performances have also been featured on radio and television with broadcasts in the United States and Europe and in movies including BBC Films Loving Miss Hatto a movie about Hattogate the recording scandal involving British pianist Joyce Hatto which features Dr. Chens performances of the fiendishly difficult Godowsky-Chopin Etudes. An active chamber musician, he also enjoys performing regularly with English cellist William Butt while collaborating with other notable musicians including trumpeters Alan Vizutti and John Wallace. Equally active as a soloist with orchestra, he has performed with the Spokane Symphony, RTE Concert Orchestra, Washington Symphony, Coeur dAlene Symphony, Gonzaga Symphony and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra.
Dr. Chen enjoys teaching and feels honored to share his knowledge with students who are passionate about music. His students have won top prizes in competitions and have been accepted to major universities and conservatories. He has also been invited to give master classes at festivals and institutions across the United States, Europe and Asia as well as being an active adjudicator at both national and international levels.
Admission to this concert is by donation, half of which will be donated to the efforts of the Harrington Opera House Society to continue with the rehabilitation and operations of the historic 1904 building as a venue for events, music, arts, and culture for the surrounding area.
