We will be play and experiment with our relationship to space; with improvisation scores to heighten our awareness of ourselves in space, others in space, and the overall composition.

REPLOTTING CHOREOGRAPHY

FEED/FORWARD/FEEDBACK: Fostering Connectivity in Immersive Performance
Immersive theater at its most intimate is responsive. It requires heightened awareness, social tact, and improvisation. In this 2-hour workshop, we will run through a few ensemble exercises that train participants in the art of connectivity.

Derek Spencer is a theatermaker whose work is typically devised, site-specific and immersive. He is the founder & artistic director of performing arts company Ceaseless Fun, a founding board member of LEIA, and the facilitator of Soft Focus, an ensemble devising & viewpoints jam. Recent directorial show credits include They Who Saw the Deep (2018), The Stars (HFF, 2018), Agnosia (2018), The Rose Theater Presents... (2018), and Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan (2017).

WRITING TECHNIQUES

Writing for an immersive experience can seem overwhelming to even experienced writers. How does one convey the story to multiple audience members if they are on separate tracks? What if the audience does something unexpected? How do we script a rewarding interaction for both participant and observer? Join Chris Porter and Michael Bates from The Speakeasy Society as they offer some writing advice, unpack the ways you can approach an immersive script, and walk you through a group exercise to experience their techniques in action.

Michael Bates is an Associate Artistic Director of The Speakeasy Society and has acted with the company since 2014. In addition to his work with The Speakeasy Society, Michael recently worked on Chained: A Victorian Nightmare, for which he was the originating actor for Marley's Ghost and the spirits of the Past, Present, and Future. He can frequently be seen on the screen of your choice during commercial breaks, and occasionally after them.
Chris Porter, an Associate Artistic Director of The Speakeasy Society, is a Los Angeles-based writer, award-winning composer, and sound designer of concert works, film, theater, and immersive events that have been seen, heard, and experienced around the world.
