-The Song of the Earth- Yuichi Kimura & Dai chi no Kai Taiko Tour 2019 Sunday, April 14th, 2019 2pm-3:45pm
Broadway Performance Hall Seattle Central College 1625 Broadway Avenue Seattle, WA 98122 206.934.3052
Kobe artist Yuichi Kimura began his taiko drumming career in the wake of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, when he performed with his high school taiko group at evacuation centers to raise the spirits of those who were suffering. His subsequent professional debut was driven by this experience with the healing power of taiko, a power which he still seeks to spread. In his early career, Kimura took part in two tours of Europe with Ichiro Jishoyas group, Wadaiko Ichiro, as well as performing in the group Fu-un no Kai under the guidance of one of the leading world experts on taiko, Eitetsu Hayashi.
Since the beginning of his solo career in 2011, Kimura has enjoyed huge successes as both a performer and a teacher, performing alongside his most dedicated pupils onstage under the group name Dai chi no Kai. The name of the ensemble finds its origins in Dai chi (Earth), the piece Kimura composed in 2005 in requiem for the Great Hanshin Earthquake. The group is widely renowned for its high-level technique, its all-percussion performance designed to be played as though it were being sung.
Come join us for a rare and unforgettable experience as these Kobe musicians bring their irresistible beat to a Seattle stage.
Kimura will play with local taiko group, Dekoboko Taiko on the stage. They will perform his original requiem piece, Dai chi (Earth) together.
Dekoboko Taiko : Started in 2017, Dekoboko Taiko () is one of the newest taiko (Japanese drumming) groups in the Pacific Northwest consisting of alumni from Taiko Kai at the University of Washington. With a desire to create and experiment with new and old sounds, Dekoboko Taikos repertoire ranges from traditional (Miyake, Hachijo) to modern classics (Omiyage) to songs self-composed by its members.
