SweetKiss Momma - Live at Louie G's
ALL-AGES Rock-n-Roll show featuring:
***SweetKiss Momma*** Though they have been fittingly described as a Roots or Southern rock, those classifications fall short when you recognize the late-60s Soul, 70s era jam band, and even early 80s metal that impressively seeps its way into the SKM brew. Whether it be classic blues riffs, funk-inspired breakdowns or grandiose anthems, none are out of place in their dynamically capable hands. These guys obviously spent some time digesting their parents record collections, and seem as though they would be right at home on a vinyl LP circa 72. At the heart of their original material is a soulful bend that is completely genuine: front man and chief songwriter Jeff Hamel was raised on a steady diet of hymns and spirituals, and skillfully unites aspects of this upbringing with the sunny-day vibe and playful bravado you would expect from someone just as concerned with rocking your socks off as any other article of clothing. By cleverly combining the raucousness of a wild Saturday night with the dulcet harmonies of an easy Sunday morning, the group exhibits the rare ability to be simultaneously both exhilaratingly fresh and comfortably familiar.
***Massy Ferguson*** They are a bar band in the best sense -- not a band relegated to bars because it will never rise higher, but a band that plays music perfectly suited to dark, crowded rooms in which there's at least a possibility of a beer glass smashing against a wall. The songs, filled with barflies, broken hearts and doomed late-night romance, would sound pretty good anywhere, though. Singer-bassist Ethan Anderson says the sound is Americana that leans more toward rock than country, and that's a pretty good description. Think Drive-By Truckers or some combination of Son Volt and The Hold Steady. Think Springsteen's "Greetings From Asbury Park" or "Nebraska." Those are all influences, as is 1970s Southern rock and good-time classic rock bands like Thin Lizzy.
***Cirke*** As a finalist on the TV Show X-Factor, Cirke brought her powerhouse voice and undeniable stage presence to homes all across her home country of Denmark. Now living in the good old USA, she has lent her talents as a singer to projects such as The Jessica Lynne Band and Limberlost, but is now branching out to show what she can do as a solo artist.
