The epic saga of the Niechcic family, told from a woman's perspective. In 1914, Barbara Niechcic is forced to leave her home the war-torn town of Kaliniec. In a crowd of terrified refugees, she recalls memories from her life and reflects on her lifes meaning: a first love for a handsome young man who married another, the first meeting with her future husband, her wedding and loveless marriage, and 40 years of an ordinary, hardworking life, counterpointed by births and deaths.
