Tangerine Screening & Guest Comic Artist Alex Star
United Against Sexual Oppression (UASO) presents the final event of our Bay Area Arts Fest to benefit sex workers at the fantastic shop Comics FTW. The store has worked with us to curate a display table of comics by and about sex workers and comics about queer sexuality.
At 7:00 p.m., we'll hear from visiting artist Alex Star, author of the webcomic Titty Bar Tales. After that, we'll screen the award-winning film Tangerine.
About TANGERINE: It's Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee (newcomer Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone, STARLET, "Generation Kill") hasn't been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the sex worker and her best friend, Alexandra (newcomer Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumor. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity. Director Sean Bakers prior films (STARLET, PRINCE OF BROADWAY) brought rich texture and intimate detail to worlds seldom seen on film. TANGERINE follows suit, bursting off the screen with energy and style. A decidedly modern Christmas tale told on the streets of L.A., TANGERINE defies expectation at every turn. (87 minutes)
About ALEX: I'm Alex, creator of Tittybar Tales, a humorous autobiographical comic about my time working as a stripper between 2003 and 2013 in the southern US. Since then I have come out as a transgender man and I am continuing to explore my identity as I work on my comic. It may seem paradoxical to be drawing and posting my boobs all over the internet while Im transitioning, but I like to think it keeps me honest. Its totally something Im interested in writing about in the future.
