Maine Songwriters Association presents its 8th annual Songwriting Contest finals Friday, November 2nd at 8 p.m. The evening showcases 6 excellent finalists each performing two songs, one of which is their entry for the 2018 contest. The lineup this year proves to be another exceptional one with of some of the best songwriting in Maine. Every year it is a superb show in a wonderful venue and every year it sells out so get your tickets early!

The finalists this year are:

Jason Roman is a self-taught singer/songwriter who continues finding solace and strength in expressing himself through song. The son of a troubadour, Jason sings his way through life and continues seeking growth as a songwriter, "It forces me to try to understand myself and the world around." His musical travels have traversed the continental US and parts of Europe but he is very pleased Maine is now home and is happy to help build community with song.

Ray Calabro is by day a Registered Nurse and by night a singer-songwriter fulfilling a musical dream he has followed most of his adult life. Ray has been entertaining folks for over thirty years throughout New England in various venues from nightclubs and farmers markets to libraries and assisted living centers. His performances include a wide variety of music styles encompassing blues, country, folk, jazz standards, oldies, and pop. Rays songwriting encompasses themes of loss and redemption. He resides with his lovely wife Linda and his faithful and most adorable dog Roxie in the Southern Maine seacoast area.www.raycalabro.com

Doug Kolmar, originally from the NYC area, has lived in Maine for over 15 years.  A childhood spent listening to Broadway musicals and Ella Fitzgerald records, followed by formal musical studies at Bard College and NYU, provided the grounding for his jazz-tinged contemporary folk songs.  Doug was a third-place winner in the 2016 MSA Songwriting Contest and was nominated in 2 categories in the 2017 Just Plain Folks Music Awards. He also appeared 8 times in the finals of the New England Songwriter Awards.  Dougs third full-length record, Arcadia, should be available at the beginning of November.

Karen Gray is a Brunswick native who truly found music about 10 years ago.... teaching herself guitar, finding her voice, and trying songwriting.  Her family and friends have watched her emerge into a sweet voiced troubadour with a style of her own.

Sara Trunzo writes the quirks and wisdom of rural northerners in a fresh and un-romantic voice. While mainstream country music pines over southern red dirt, Trunzo pulls from a decade of running a food bank farm where she helped get local produce into the hands of rural Mainers living in poverty. Her time in the farm fields, fishing boats, community meetings, and food pantry warehouses of Maine add wrinkles to her characters and place to their places. Sara draws influence from- and has studied with- master songwriters Darrell Scott and Mary Gauthier. Her debut EP thanks birdie dropped in 2017; she toured nationally in 2018; her first full-length album is slated for a November 2018 release. Sara calls Unity, Maine home- and also resides in Nashville, Tennessee and on the road. www.saratrunzo.com

Olivia Frances is an old soul with a sunny disposition. Wisdom shines through her pop-folk musical creations, which is obvious to listeners on her latest single, "Moon to My Sun," which received critical acclaim. It was named Best Pop Song of 2017 in the Ohio Music Awards, the VOX Pop (Voice of the People) Winner in the Love Song Category at The 16th Annual Independent Music Awards, and won 1st prize in the Singer-Songwriter Category at the 2018 New England Songwriting Competition. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Olivia now resides in Worcester, MA where she is a student at Clark University. Olivia is majoring in global environmental studies and minoring in music with a concentration in jazz guitar.
