Shout & Shine
3rd Annual Shout & Shine: A Celebration of Diversity in Bluegrass
Blues + Bluegrass
7:00pm September 24, 2018 at the North Carolina Museum of History's Daniels Auditorium.
The evening will feature North Carolina blues musicians collaborating with some of the best voices and players in bluegrass -- such as 2016 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year Danny Paisley, and powerhouse singer/songwriter Amythyst Kiah -- as well as full sets by North Carolina's own Glorifying Vine Sisters, Argentina-based bluegrass band Che Apalache.
Shout & Shine is the first event of its kind at the International Bluegrass Music Association's World of Bluegrass business conference. The showcase was born in 2016 as a direct response to the North Carolina General Assembly's controversial bathroom bill, HB2. Shout & Shine was created to foster representation and encourage inclusion of the diverse artists, musicians, and professionals who love and create bluegrass and roots music. The existence of these genres is predicated upon the lives and stories of othered people. By amplifying diverse and underrepresented voices we present a reminder that this music belongs to all and that inclusion strengthens our communities, our businesses and organizations, and our art.
Now in its third year, Shout & Shine is growing and refocusing its mission on highlighting and reincorporating these voices not only at the showcase, but throughout the week-long convention and festival. This year's theme will be built upon the connection between North Carolina's Piedmont blues pickers and bluegrass, pairing musicians from the Music Maker Relief Foundation with the best and brightest of bluegrass to illustrate that vernacular music from Appalachia and its offshoot genres would not exist in their current forms without people of color, African Americans, African slaves, and the influence of the music they created.
Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the IBMA's Trust Fund and the Music Maker Relief Foundation in order to demonstrate that we, the marginalized and underrepresented folks celebrated by this event, are invested in our communities and believe in their success -- now and in the future.
