Resonance @ First Church presents "An Evening of Vaughan Williams"
The First Church Festival Chorus and Orchestra will perform several works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, including his eloquent plea for peace, the choral cantata "Dona nobis pacem," written in 1936 amid growing fear that global war would soon break out again.
Angela Arnold (soprano) and Billy Lawley (baritone) will sing the solos.
Derek Tam will conduct the First Church Festival Chorus, a 100-member ensemble drawn from various Bay Area choruses.
This beautiful program will also feature Vaughan Williams' "Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus", as well as his "Serenade to Music" a piece that Sergei Rachmaninoff said had moved him like no other.
*** In 2014, First Church Berkeley, a premier venue for music performance in the East Bay, created its own exciting series of chamber and orchestral music concerts. Now in its fifth season, Resonance @ First Church has become a mainstay of the East Bay artistic calendar.
Music has always been an important part of the life of First Church. It touches the soul and gives sound and voice to ineffable mystery. We sing together and share our musical gifts. We also delight in the special talents of artists from within our community and beyond.
Derek Tam, First Church's Director of Music, curates this exciting series.
