Kern - live at the Irish Center
Joining us Live on August 21st at 8PM, the Irish Center presents Kern - a contemporary folk trio from County Louth. Live in the Fireside Room, they'll be presenting tunes from their debut album "False Deceiver."
____________________
Kern is a contemporary folk trio from Louth, Ireland. Brendan McCreanor is a thrilling uilleann piper who has worked extensively in both traditional music and in contemporary crossover projects. By contrast, SJ McArdle is a well-known rock and folk musician, a published songwriter and singer (songs from his three albums have featured in film, TV and radio and he has toured extensively). And Barry Kieran is a former Leinster champion fiddler, steeped in the raw, pure music of Oriel. All three are from Louth, which shows in their selection of traditional music and in their self-written compositions.
False Deceiver is their debut album. The album is a true blend, in terms of its mood, its styles and its musicians. Thunderous sets of traditional tunes vie with lyrical, atmospheric songs, all underpinned by the production of legendary Lúnasa and Waterboys bassist Trevor Hutchinson. His distinctive double bass rounds out the album's sound along with the bodhrán of Eamonn Moloney of FullSet.
The bands new single is Till The Docklands Drown. Written by SJ McArdle, the song was performed by actress Tara Lee in the IFTA-winning Element Pictures film A Date For Mad Mary (Best Film, 2017).
Tracks from False Deceiver have been featured on RTE Lyric FM's The Blue of the Night, the Mike Harding Folk Show, numerous shows on RTE Radio 1 and Raidio na Gaeltachta and Newstalks The Pat Kenny Show. The band launched the album at Willie Clancy Summer School and has been playing a host of festivals and concerts, including Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Dingle Tradfest and Baltimore Fiddle Fair, Drogheda Arts Festival and Vantastival.
Praise for False Deceiver:
"Outstanding ... an intriguing release. Those interested in trad music that crosses over into singer/songwriter territory will find this album particularly attractive, but its accessibility will have easy appeal to general audiences" - Irish Echo
"A solid grasp of traditional and contemporary forms. Rich sonorous blending of uilleann pipes and fiddles lift the instrumentals while SJ McArdle's gritty voice and dexterous songs add an interesting extra lustre" - fRoots Magazine
"The band's dashing blend of traditional folk and contemporary songwriting is brilliantly captured on its debut CD, False Deceiver ... Steeped in the tradition yet boasting a contemporary poetic sensibility, it will be a surprise if Kern doesnt go on to bigger and better things" - The Thin Air
"False Deceiver remains lively and full of musical life to the very end. This album never wavers in its musical flair. It succeeds in combining all three members diverse traditions in a very contemporary way" - Irish Music Magazine
