NCAA SCHOLAR ATHLETE READINESS SEMINAR
CLARIFICATION: This seminar is intended to help younger athletes (& parents/guardians) understand the steps/decisions involved in achieving eligibility as defined by the NCAA prior to going through the recruiting process for college sports--it is not designed for athletes who have already begun the recruiting process or who have signed letters of intent.
BACKGROUND: For many students and their families, playing college sports has been a lifelong ambition. Athletes and their support network need to fully understand the expectations of the NCAA and its member institutions with respect to eligibility and amateur status for all 23 sports PRIOR TO MAKING DECISIONS IN JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL. Without this understanding, decision making along the way can inadvertently jeopardize eligibility, amateur status and the dream of college sports and a college education. The NCAA rules have changed recently affecting freshman entering high school in 2012/13 and beyond. The rule changes apply to all 23 NCAA sports--this seminar therefore addresses all 23 NCAA sports! It will be held at Lone Star College--Montgomery Campus.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Ideally, athletes in 6th grade and above are encouraged to sign up for the seminar together with a parent or guardian if possible. Getting early insight will assist in making decisions about high school course selections, extracurricular sporting activities and college aptitude testing. Each attendee must pay the $20 registration fee--no discounts are permitted per NCAA regulations. No Refunds. This seminar runs approximately 2 hours; after covering the expenses of the event, net funds raised enable the not-for-profit sports organization which hosts the seminar to purchase athletic equipment.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This seminar provides insight into the detailed requirements with which a scholar athlete must comply during high school in order to achieve eligibility for participation in NCAA sports. The goal of the seminar is to demystify and streamline the process. In addition, the course covers a walk-through of the mechanics of registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center in order to receive certification of eligibility and amateur status. Initial guidance on the process of contacting individual universities is also provided.
DISCLAIMERS: We are not scholarship agents and we will not be discussing any specific scholarships. Likewise, no collegiate recruiting will occur during this seminar. Additionally, this seminar is designed to be an overview and to provide current information. Given the passage of time and unique individual circumstances, attendees are encouraged to continue to familiarize themselves with detailed rules and to use all resources available to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the guidelines and achievement of individual goals as time moves on. In other words, participating in this seminar is not a guarantee of college acceptance, college recruitment or participation in college level sports.
