In response to the ravages of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, REAP has committed itself, since 2008, to one rural community and its school so that the children and their surviving parents can reconstruct their lives toward collaborative healing and trust.
Muhoza Rwabukamba, a genocide survivor, will share his journey through his heart of darkness and speak to the emergence of his resiliency in the rebuilding of his family and life. -Muhoza is a founding board member of REAP, its chief advisor, and is a human rights activist, who has spoken at schools and other organizations.
Judith Schmidt, PhD, will discuss how we can develop a practice of radical hope. When our survival is threated by feelings of shame or fear, we can, through creative imagination transform seeing the face of the Other from an enemy to be destroyed to a sacred and fellow vulnerable human. Judith will touch upon child development, neuroscience, and mindfulness practice.
-Judith is the co-founder of The Center for Intentional Living. She specializes in trauma, life transitions, and is a Waking and Dream Practitioner
Danny Martin, PhD, will discuss how relationships can be a laboratory of safety and trust out of which hope is born. This applies to all kinds of relationships, especially to cross-group relationships between people of different color, culture, religion, gender, class, and sexual orientation. Danny will also demonstrate how the crucible of dialogue can generate hope within and between people.
-Danny is a consultant and coach in the art of dialogue. He learned about dialogue in the conflict of Belfast where he was born, in the challenges of Africa where he worked for many years, and in the world of non-profit and other organizations.
Ed Ballen, LCSW, is the founder of REAP and specializes in working with children, adolescents, and families.
The Treble Makers, an a capella group from John Jay High School, will perform several songs amidst the presentations.
