Screening of WE WOMEN WARRIORS
IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Join us on Monday March 11th at 7:30 PM at the Gala Hispanic Theatre for a screening of the feature documentary WE WOMEN WARRIORS. Panel discussion to follow with Gimena Sanchez, Virginia Bouvier, Lisa Haugaard, & Nicole Karsin

In Colombia's war-torn indigenous villages, three brave women from distinct tribes use nonviolent resistance to defend their peoples' survival. Warfare between the guerrillas, paramilitary groups, and armed forces imperils Colombia's 102 aboriginal groups, dozens of which face extinction because of the conflict. Despite being trapped in a protracted predicament financed by the drug trade, indigenous women are resourcefully leading and creating transformation imbued with hope. WE WOMEN WARRIORS bears witness to neglected human rights catastrophes and interweaves character-driven stories about female empowerment, unshakable courage, and faith in the endurance of indigenous culture.

Panelists' Bios:
Gimena Sánchez-Garzoli is the leading Colombia human rights advocate at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA). Ms. Sanchez is an expert on internally displaced persons, refugees and human rights, and her work has shed light on the situation of Colombia's more than 4 million internally displaced personsas well as help expose the links between Colombia's government and drug-funded paramilitaries.
Virginia Bouvier has worked since 2003 at the U.S. Institute of Peace, where she serves as senior program officer for Latin America and heads USIP's Colombia conflict team. She recently served on the United Nations Standby Team of Mediation Experts sponsored by the Norwegian Refugee Council. Prior to USIP, she was an assistant professor of Latin American literature and culture at the University of Maryland, and was senior associate at the Washington Office on Latin America, focusing on Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Bouvier has written and spoken widely on conflict and peace issues, peace processes, conflict prevention, and issues of gender and human rights. She has consulted widely with government, non-governmental, foundations, and international agencies.
Lisa Haugaard has been executive director of the Latin America Working Group since June 2002. From 1993 to 2001, she served as Senior Associate at the LAWG, where she worked on Colombia and Central America policy, development assistance and other topics. She has testified before the U.S. Congress and produced numerous reports and articles on U.S.-Latin America policy. Prior to her work at the LAWG, she was executive director of the Central America Historical Institute in Washington, DC and writer, editor and translator for the Jesuit Instituto Historico Centroamericano in Managua, Nicaragua.
Nicole Karsin is the film's Producer and Director. She covered Colombia's armed conflict as an independent journalist for a U.S. audience from 2002-2009. She was a fellow at the National Association of Latino Independent Producers' Latino Producers Academy & Film Independent's 7-week Inaugural Documentary Lab in 2011. She formed Todos Los Pueblos Productions LLC (All the Peoples' Productions) to move audiences to action through artful, character-driven films about global struggles for human rights and dignity in 2007. WE WOMEN WARRIORS is her opera prima. It premiered in August 2012 at the 16th Annual Academy Awards-qualifying DocuWeeks theatrical showcase in NYC and LA.
