Ferguson / Nicholson Duo with opening set by Beats Workin
A house concert (NOT) in our home.

Roger and Mick have performed together throughout Washington and British Columbia in various ensembles for over twenty years. They are excited to bring to Canada their latest project, the Ferguson/Nicholson Duo, showcasing the joyful interplay and impressive technique that is a hallmark of this ensemble. Roger is an award winning multi string instrumentalist and Mick is a veteran bassist comfortable on the acoustic, electric, and uke  basses. Together, they'll present fiddle tunes, hot jazz numbers, lush ballads, bluegrass classics, and expressive waltzes that range from carefully crafted arrangements to wide-open improvisational interplay.

Roger grew up surrounded by Bluegrass and traditional roots music- it was a part of his familys lifestyle. His grandpas both were fiddle players, and is grandma (on his dads side) had many of her own songs published. Rogers parents, from Missouri and Nebraska were fairly solid musicians by way of tradition. At twelve years old, Roger's father showed him traditional fiddle tunes by ear - on the mandolin.  By fourteen, Roger was performing with professional acts throughout the Northwest. In 1979 he won first place in the National Flatpick Championship, and placed fourth on the mandolin.  At age nineteen, as a music major at Olympic College, Roger began teaching their guitar courses and is still an adjunct music professor there. He has toured the continental United States, written and recorded on many notable PBS documentaries, and has had several instructional columns published in Guitar Player Magazine. Now settled in Poulsbo, Roger keeps busy performing, recording and teaching.

Mick started out as a tuba player, and was a member of the Bremerton Symphony for 6 years. While a Navy musician in the 1970's, he led several jazz and rock bands as an electric bassist touring thoughout the Pacific. In order to concentrate on the upright bass, Mick joined the Washington, DC Navy Band in 1984, culminating with a four year stint in the navy's premier Country/Bluegrass group, "Country Current." Mick moved back home to Washington state in 1995 and quickly became an active player in the local acoustic music scene. Comfortable with a wide variety of styles, he has gigged with artists ranging from Vince Gill to Dizzy Gillespie. Mick also freelances as an electric and acoustic bassist and teaches at various band camps and workshops. He also plays a mean tuba, though he does not endorse or receive any remuneration from the Mean Tuba Company.

Beats Workin is an acoustic Swing, Roots and Jump Blues trio, based in Victoria, BC. Playing and singing material ranging from their own energetic original songs and instrumentals, right down through music of the 1940s and beyond, they keep the beat workin on Acoustic and Archtop Guitars, Upright Bass and 8 string Lap Steel Guitars. Beats Workin is: David K, Mark Johnson and Bob de Wolff.
David K (Vocals, 8-String Lap Steel, Guitar) Touring internationally, performing, writing and recording for over 25 years, David has worked with artists and bands playing Blues to Country, Celtic to Western Swing. Great vocals, fine steel guitar, and well crafted original songs round off his place in the trio.
Mark Johnson (Vocals, Upright Bass) Marks fine acoustic bass gives a dynamic and exciting drive to the group. Both rhythmic and melodic, it is a strong, vital part of the instrumental mix, and is made only better by his fearless bass solos. A skilled composer, Marks instrumentals bring even greater dimension to this trio.
Bob de Wolff (Vocals, Acoustic and Archtop Guitars) Bob brings extensive knowledge of Swing and Jump Blues music into the Beats Workin mix, along with solid rhythm and lead guitars, and strong vocals. Fluent in many styles, he is especially drawn to the quirky, light-hearted Swing tunes of the 1940s and 50s.
