Above the Tin tells the story of 12 students from some of San Diego's poorest neighborhoods who with all odds stacked against them went on to become Ivy League graduates and professional athletes and it all started with the unlikely sport of squash.
For Reyna, Sharon, Yan, Tiffany, Marissa, Ana, Hannah, William, Eric aka "Rookie", Erik, Kevin and Jesus aka "Chuy," college was never guaranteed; no one in their family had ever gone. But two twists of fate changed everything. First, being accepted to the prestigious UCSD Preuss School and then, joining Access Youth Academy, where they learned the East Coast elite sport that would change their lives.
San Diego filmmakers Chris Holloway and Ray Gallardo followed the students in 2011-2012 as they competed for the squash national championship at Yale. On a world stage, the students experienced triumph and tragedy all while balancing SATs, college decisions and teenage hormones as they battled not just the best teams in the nation, but a system fundamentally rigged against them.
