"Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas" - No plans on Christmas Day? Join the LA Jewish Film Festival for a special LA Premiere!
Believe it or not, all of those beautiful Christmas songs that we hear year after year were written by Jewish songwriters.
Q&A to follow film with classic film expert MICHAEL SCHLESINGER. (Michael is widely acknowledged as the dean of classic film distributors, having worked for more than 25 years at MGM, Paramount and Sony. He is a consultant to the TCM Classic Film Festival and a trustee of the American Cinemathéque.)
SYNOPSIS: Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, DREAMING OF A JEWISH CHRISTMAS is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Torme and Johnny Marks who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity's most musical holiday. From director Larry Weinstein (Inside Hana's Suitcase), its an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop cultures mainstream - a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it.
With interviews by Jackie Mason, Alan Dershowitz, and a blend of musicians, comedians and experts, "Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas" is about pure joy and celebration of the human spirit, infused with humor and the history behind your favorite Christmas carols.
(Fact: The hit "Do You Hear What I Hear?" (which tells the story of the Nativity) written by married couple Gloria Shayne Baker and Noel Regney, was a plea for peace during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
