Winterreise: The Winter Journey
The great German Romantic song cycle WINTERREISE comprises some of Franz Schubert's richest and most beautiful music.
It was published the year of Schubert's death at 31, and like some of Western music's other great end-of-life masterworks (Mozart's REQUIEM, Britten's DEATH IN VENICE), it is spilling over with inspiration. Schubert shades its 24 songs with all the musical and emotional colours at his disposal as he paints the battle between hope and despair inside a broken heart.
Though Anna Cal and Isaiah Bell have studied, performed, and loved this piece for many years, this is our first time working on it together. We think the house and grounds of Victoria's Tudor House Press are the perfect setting for an afternoon of such delicious Romantic music and poetry.
The performance will be sung in German, with English surtitles. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Students are encouraged to pay what they can afford, if they get their tickets at the door.
MORE ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
ISAIAH BELL performs regularly on international stages, including recent appearances at Lincoln Center, the Edinburgh Festival, the Toronto Symphony, and Carnegie Hall. The New York Times called his interpretation of the Madwoman in Brittens Curlew River (with the Mark Morris Dance Group at the Brooklyn Academy of Music) "a performance of exquisite poignancy." This season, he makes debuts at the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Atelier, the Seattle Symphony, and the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. He is also a composer and a poet.
