Latino Music Festival presents Fulcrum Point New Music Project
A broad range of electroacoustic music composed by todays most distinct Latin-American composers. Inspired by Peruvian folklore, Latin Jazz & Abstract Electronic music

Fulcrum Point New Music Project, a Chicago leader in classical contemporary music is approaching its 20th year by taking part in The Latino Music Festival with a concert of electronic and acoustic music. The program recognizes the works of Latin-American composers while mapping a timeline of musical inspirations, from Peruvian folklore to Latin Jazz to the contemporary soundscape of electronic music.
The concert takes place on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 7PM at Merit School of Music's Gottlieb Hall, 38 S Peoria, Chicago, IL 60607. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students/seniors.
Known for an intense and angular sound, Gustavo Leone's "Corson" introduces the program by featuring trumpet virtuoso and Artistic Director Stephen Burns performing with ambient electronics. Latin Grammy Award Winner Gabriela Lena Franks "Rio Profundos", written for cello and piano, evokes an homage to Peruvian folk music in a neo-classical style inspired by Jose Maria Arguendos novel of the same name.
Special guest pianist Susan Merdinger will perform "Saxon Variations" by festival director Elbio Barilari. These playful variations pay homage to Satie and are inspired by the dynamic motion and serene ambience of the ocean, kites, gables, and gardens.
Next is Rodrigo Sigal's "Tolerance," a conversational duet between cello; and electronics. Sigal is the director of the Centre for Music and the Sonic Arts (CMASS) in Morelia Mexico and has entered a fruitful collaboration with Fulcrum Point which will produce a world premiere by one of Mexicos best known composers, Javier Álvarez.
In anticipation of this world premiere, this concert concludes with Álvarezs "Temazcal," a tour-de-force show piece for maracas and electronics featuring the stunning pyrotechnics of Edward Harrison, principal timpanist of the Lyric Opera Orchestra.

Presented by the International Latino Cultural Center (ILCC), The Chicago Latino Music Festival (CLMF) produces performances and promotes awareness of music from Latin America & Spain, ranging from the Colonial period to the 21st century. The Latino Music Festival functions as a bridge, bringing Latino classical music to audiences in Chicago. At the same time, the CLMF fulfills an educational role by bringing this music to Chicagos neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs through concerts and educational programs. In addition to a roster of internationally acclaimed artists participating annually in the Festival and its programs, the Latino Music Festival places a strong emphasis on local talent, featuring Chicagos most prestigious orchestras, ensembles and soloists, as well as a number of talented young professionals. The CLMF commissions new pieces from Latino composers and features world, US and/or Chicago premieres of works both new and historical.

Created in 1998 by conductor, composer and trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns, the mission of Fulcrum Point New Music Project is to be a Chicago leader of diverse new music by presenting multi-media performances, collaborating with innovative tech to support educational programs within the CPS, as well as commissioning and recording fresh new works. Its programs are inspired and influenced by popular culture, including literature, film, dance, folk, rock, jazz, blues, Latin and world music.
