Mainstage 1 - Dido and Aeneas / Aeneas and Dido
TORONTO MASQUE THEATRE presents
DIDO AND AENEAS by Henry Purcell and Nahum Tate (ca. 1687) AENEAS AND DIDO by James Rolfe and André Alexis (2007)
One of Toronto Masque Theatre's most acclaimed productions, Virgil's tale of the tragic love between the Queen of Carthage and a Trojan hero is told from two very different perspectives in this powerful double bill.
What does Artistic Director Larry Beckwith have to say?
"I make no secret of my love for Henry Purcell. Combining brilliant storytelling, masterful musical form, and unbridled emotion, Dido and Aeneas is one of his greatest works. In 2006, we asked James and André to create a contemporary response to the Purcell masterpiece. Their understanding of the original and their approach to re-telling the story from Aeneas's point of view was ingenious. A dream come true."
Featuring an all-star cast, including Krisztina Szabo, Alex Dobson, Jacqueline Woodley and Andrea Ludwig, performing alongside an eight-member chorus and baroque orchestra.
