Aszemar Glenn Band
For Aszemar Glenn, it's never been about the "next big thing" when it comes to music.
"I've learned to appreciate simplicity," Glenn says. "All music swings if it's played from the soul."
It's that kind of philosophy that fuels the Aszemar Glenn Band, Portland's newest musical collective. Glenn has assembled a 14-member group of musicians that evokes the glory days of Benny Goodman or Gene Krupa, but maintains an elastic approach to genre rather than a constrictive one.
The Aszemar Glenn Band swings, true, but knows the date on the calendar. The group plays an array of danceable music--standards and originals, familiar and fresh--that appeals to both longtime music fans as well as novices.
The group performs every second Friday at the North Portland Eagles Aerie (7611 N. Exeter) and every second Saturday at the East Portland Eagles Lodge (4904 SE Hawthorne Blvd.)
Glenn received his education at Pacific University. He was awarded OMTA state music award in music composition. In addition to founding the Oregon Cascade Symphony, he has composed numerous musical pieces and film scores for organizations including Multnomah County Library and the Regional Arts and Cultural Council. He is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts multi arts grant. He has performed most recently at the 2012 API International Music Festival in Colorado Springs, CO.
