BELLISSIMO - Handbells with Rebecca Hendricks
Rebecca Hendricks has been singing ever since she can remember and she has added the magic of hand bells over the last 20 years. She has degrees in music and education from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where she sang in the world-renowned choir, spent her career in corporate training and consulting, and has also lived in Arizona and the Bay Area. But she has always been involved in music wherever she has been.
She and her husband, Ted Key, moved to Cambria two years ago and she joined the Cambria Chorale and music at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, where she currently directs a hand bell choir. She is also delighted to sing with Lyra, the womens vocal group created by the wonderful Jan Callner.
While living in the Bay Area, she rang with her church group as well as Bay Bells, which is the oldest community hand bell group in the country. She also played with Bell Appeal in San Francisco a funky group that arranges rock, blues, jazz and even heavy metal for their performances. Four years ago, she formed a trio called Arioso Carol Flint and Carlyn Grantham will be joining the concert with Rebecca.
You will also hear Rebeccas Bellissimo partner, Judy Zaretzka, from Arroyo Grande; they have enjoyed presenting pro bono mini-concerts, holiday music, and hand bell presentations to organizations around SLO County over the last two years. Rebecca is also delighted to have our local and beloved Kate Hepworth provide piano accompaniment she and Kate love performing together whenever they can.
Many people have heard full hand bell choirs in churches and schools, but it is more unique to hear solos, duets, trios and even bells on a bell tree in a hand bell concert. Rebecca is excited to play commissioned music written for Bay Bells, folk music, works by Bach and Handel, and pieces by Leonard Cohen, and well-known hand bell composers. Because of her love of music history, she will also be sharing a bit of hand bell history her mission is to allow others to enjoy the wonders of hand bells, just as she has.
She considers herself fortunate to have her own three-octave set of Malmark bells, and has studied with Linda Krantz and Michele Sharik, renowned handbell soloists in the Los Angeles area.
