Woody Guthrie--Hard Travelin': Life in America
Come for a wonderful evening of folk music! The Peak to Peak Chorale presents the music of Woody Guthrie, one of the greats in American folk music as a writer, singer, and balladeer. Woody also wrote lyrically and from the heart about his childhood, his hard traveling, life in the Dust Bowl and Depression, and his belief in the power of labor unions. Despite his tragic death from Huntington's disease in the 1950's, his influence lives on through musicians such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Chapin, John Mellencamp, Pete Seeger, Jerry Garcia, and Tom Paxton, and of course his son Arlo Guthrie. We will weave together our favorite Woody songs with a selection of his writings that speak to us most strongly, and will invite plenty of audience participation! Evening performances will be held on May 5 at the historic Elks Club in Central City and on May 6 at the Golden Gate Grange Hall in Golden Gate Canyon, followed by an afternoon performance on May 7 at the Coal Creek Improvement Association hall in Coal Creek Canyon. Snacks, desserts, and beverages will be included in the ticket price.
