Donna Hightower Jazz singer Donna Hightower retired to Austin recently and occasionally still performs with some of her favorite local musicians. Her many career highlights include being signed by Capital Records in 1958, performances at the Apollo Theater, and touring the "chitlin circuit" with Louis Jordan and B.B. King in the 1950s. Most of the Missouri-born singer's career happened in Europe, where she went to sing for a week at a London jazz club in 1959 and stayed 31 years. In 2005, she was the guest of honor of the IV Festival Internacional de Jazz in Spain, featuring her former tour mate B.B. King and others. Among her great hits, the most famous is "This World Today Is a Mess," a single that sold over one million copies in Europe.
