Beyond the Bridge: lyrical & motivic techniques for music makers
Musicians today have lots of tools to support making music with loops, repeating patterns, and common song structures. But often these tools don't support the lyrical and motivic musical adventures that you'll encounter in chamber music, symphonies, and operas.
If you're interested in adopting these 'fractal' composition methods for parts of your music or for whole projects, this workshop will serve as a bootcamp.
Topics to be covered (with examples & techniques) include: - lyrical through-composition - musical semantics - delayed and prolonged cadences - motivic development - 'organic' modulation - emergent musical structures
Composer / producer Christopher Corbell leads this course, bringing a unique perspective as a songwriter who has transitioned to chamber-music and opera composition with Cult of Orpheus (producer of Viva's Holiday: An Opera in One Act) and Classical Revolution PDX.
Familiarity with music notation is helpful but not required.
