Izotov/meier/thiefain/michel Jazz Quartet
On January 7, 2017, UUC Surprise Music Department presents izotov/meier/thiefain/michel, a jazz quartet @ 7 pm. Drawing on the spirit of jazz, minimalism, folk music, and rock n' roll, this group sows a unique sound in contemporary music. Each composition is a vignette exploring a specific idea, mood, or texture. Each member's improvisation illuminates a different aspect of the topic at hand. Heres a little something about the musicians. Aleksey Izotov is a pianist, composer, and educator originally from Phoenix, AZ, who now resides in Washington, D.C. He is passionate about improvisation, contemporary music, and music from other cultures, and these influences are reflected in his own compositions and performances. In Arizona, he was a member of two forward thinking ensembles: Nautabot and OpenScore Ensemble, both of which featured his compositions. In January of 2015, Aleksey was the featured composer of the OhMyEars Marathon concert, a music festival dedicated to showcasing new, forward thinking music. Aleksey has also had the honor of learning from master improvisers such as Curtis Fuller, Rufus Reid, Vijay Iyer, Ralph Alessi, and Kris Davis. Aleksey is a graduate of the Arizona State University Jazz Studies Program, where he studied with Michael Kocour.
Based out of Tempe, Arizona, guitarist John Meier has been performing throughout the Phoenix area for 5 years. Performing a balanced repertoire of jazz standards and original music, Johns primary focus is on composing and performing original compositions influenced by jazz and other genres of music, such as rock and classical music. Some of these compositions have been featured at the ASU Jazz Composition Competition and the Reno Jazz Festival. John draws his influence from a wide variety of contemporary and traditional jazz artists such as Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Ben Monder, Brad Mehldau, and Charlie Parker. John has performed with artist Dee Alexander, Ralph Alessi and Ingrid Jensen, to name a few.
