TorQ Toronto Concert Series 2012-2013 Subscription
For 2012-2013, TorQ Percussion Quartet presents its inaugural Toronto concert series.  This series will feature four concerts, each with a different theme, at different venues around Toronto.  For this first season, we've programmed an exciting mix of new and more well-known music, and have a number of exciting guest artists involved.  Subscribers to the entire series receive admission to all four concerts for the price of three.

Subscription prices:  $70 general/$50 arts worker/$30 student

Concert 1:  "Modulations"
8pmpm, Saturday September 8, 2012
The Great Hall Black Box Theatre [formerly the Theatre Centre] (1087 Queen Street West  enter off Dovercourt Road)
Single tickets $20 general/$15 arts worker/$10 student

"Modulations" features a range of new music from local, national and international composers.  Repertoire includes Christos Hatzis' remarkable new mallet work Modulations, the world premiere of TorQ member Jamie Drake's The Blue Guitar, the Ontario premiere of Newfoundlander Rob Power's Cappahayden, the John Luther Adams snare drum quartet "dust into dust" from Strange and Sacred Noise, and Ann Southam's playful Natural Resources.

Concert 2:  "Notes from Brazil"
7:30pm, Sunday November 11, 2012
Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas Street W)
Single tickets $20 general/$15 arts worker/$10 student

Featuring special guest, Toronto percussionist and composer Mark Duggan, the second concert will focus on the music of Brazil (and other areas close to it).  Repertoire will include Mark's arrangements of Brazilian choro tunes for mallet instruments, his composition Slow Swirl at the Edge of the Sea, arrangements of tunes by Airto, Chick Corea, and more.

Concert 3:  "Off the page"
8pm, February 7, 2013
Gallery 345 (345 Sorauren Avenue)
Single tickets $20 general/$15 arts worker/$10 student

Taking place in the beautiful, intimate performance space of Gallery 345, this concert is all about the tradition of improvisation in its many forms.  Featuring both structured and free improvisation, "Off the page" will explore the myriad of textures and sounds that can result from spontaneous music making on everything from talking drums to kalimbas, cowbells to whirly tubes.

Concert 4:  "New Manoeuvers"
8pm May 3, 2pm & 8pm May 4
Dancemakers Performance Space (9 Trinity Avenue, Distillery District)
Single tickets $30 general/$20 arts worker/$10 student

"New Manoeuvers" marks the first time TorQ has collaborated with dancers and choreographers in a concert setting.  Choreographers Linda Garneau, Louis Laberge-Coté, Jacob Niedzwiecki and Lauren Van Gijn will present new dances to a mixture of old and new percussion music:  John Cage's seminal Third Construction, Steve Reich's Mallet Quartet, and premieres of works by James Rolfe and TorQ's Daniel Morphy.
