Heroic Visions--The Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis Advances Making Music that Matters
Our opening concert signifies the power of music and its connection to idealism as we perform Mahler's great Symphony No. 1, experiencing this great musician's work to invoke his past and present life experiences in an evocative and often impassioned sonic landscape. We also invite alums of our inner-city tuition-free summer ensemble program "Strings and jazzy Things" to perform an additional work with us. Having them in the audience and on-stage provides unique experiences for them to hear and experience great music! We start our season with Michael Torke's "Javelin", music constructed of the tiniest musical gestures that give way to a broad sweeping heroic theme celebrating the noble energies of the Olympics, a time honored tradition of human enterprise. The Philharmonic embarks on its seventy-sixth year working to capture the essence of our continuing hard detail work with the most noble intentions. This kind of work can build the enormous structure and demands of Gustav Mahler's "Titan" Symphony.
