Music Conference Alberta 2016 Gala Concert
The Music Conference Alberta Joint Planning Committee is thrilled to present the MCA 2016 Gala Concert featuring Alberta Youth Choir, ABA Wind Symphony, Louisa Lu (pianist) andVan Li (violinist).

The concert takes place Saturday, October 22 at 7:30PM at the Eric Harvey Theatre at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

General admission is $20. Tickets to the concert and closing reception are $25.

ALBERTA YOUTH CHOIR
The Alberta Youth Choir is the province's honour choir for singers ages 16-22. AYC provides a unique opportunity for outstanding young singers from across the province to join forces in the pursuit of excellence in choral music under the direction of a renowned conductor. This year, Fred Sjöberg will conduct.

FRED SJÖBERG, AYC Guest Conductor
Fred Sjöberg, born 1953, is an educated singer and choral conductor at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and Örebro. Among others he has studied with Prof. Solwig Grippe, Prof. Eric Ericson and Prof. Helmuth Rilling. He has been the first conductor to conduct the three major international youth choirs as World Youth Choir (1991 and 2005), World Chamber Choir (1993) and European Youth Choir (1999). He has been the principal conductor for the French National Youth Choir and invited guest conductor for Japan National Youth Choir.

When the Swedish organization for young choirs UngiKör started he was elected as their first president. In 2000 he was appointed as the Conductor of the Year in Sweden by

SCDA (Swedish Choral Directors Association) appointed with the Johannes Norrby Medallion 2001 for outstanding and service and development to the Swedish Choral Life.

From 1997 to 2004 he was the Music Director and conductor of the biggest sponsor project ever for the Swedish Choral life in Sweden called Notes for Millions.

From 2000 to 2004 he was also Music Director of the Swedish Choral Centre as well as Artistic Director for Lund International Choral Festival from 2005 to 2006. Since 2009 he is Music Director of Swedish International Choral Centre in Örebro. Fred Sjöberg has been Vice President of Europa Cantat as well as President of the Music Commission of Europa Cantat and has also been Vice President of IFCM. He is Council Member of INTERKULTUR and also on the Artistic Directorium of INTERKULTUR.

From 2015 he is General Artistic Director of INTERKULTUR.

YAN LI, violinist

17 year old Chinese-Korean violinist Yan Li is currently studying with William van der Sloot in the Advanced Performance Program at Mount Royal Conservatory in Canada. Yan has had masterclasses with many respected musicians from around the world including James Ehnes, Ian Swensen, Andrés Cárdenes, Tong Wei Dong, Noah-Bendix Balgley, and Pinchas Zukerman.
Yan has been selected as a semi-finalist to participate in the 2016 Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Standard Life Competition this November. She was a prizewinner at the Canadian Music Competition from 2010 to 2016. Yan has been a first prize winner at the Alberta Music Festival. As a featured young artist, she was invited to perform at the Canadas Rising Stars concert in Canmore and the Wyatt Artist in Residence Concert Series Path to Virtuosity along with the world virtuoso, Ning Feng. She made her orchestral debut with Calgary Civic Symphony performing the Brahms Violin Concerto after winning the Calgary Concerto Competition. Yan has also performed as a soloist with Calgary Youth Orchestra where she serves as concertmaster. When she was 12, she participated in the Young Artist Program at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In 2011, she was the youngest participant in the prestigious Morningside Music Bridge International Summer Festival and has participated consecutively for the past five summers. Yan spent a week at Orford International Academy before going to Meadowmount School of Music this summer.

LOUISA LU, pianist

18  year old Edmonton-born Louisa Lu loves to play piano and violin. She has been a National Finalist at the Canadian Music Competition for 12 consecutive years. In 2016, she placed 1st in the CMC National Finals held in Drummondville, Quebec. In 2014, she won the Grand Prize of her age category in the inaugural Hailun North Americas Search for the Best Piano Competition, where she took home a brand new piano.  Louisa also won the Northern Alberta Piano Concerto Competition in both the Intermediate and Senior categories in 2012 and 2016, respectively. She has been awarded multiple 1st Places at the Alberta Music Festival Provincial Final.

Louisa holds ARCT Diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music in both Piano and Violin Performance, and received the Licentiate in Piano Performance (LRCM) at the age of 14.  She has also been awarded The Advanced History and Theory Certificate, First Class Honors with Distinction from RCM at the age of 13.  She is the recipient of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Gold Medal for the Grade 8, 9 and 10 Violin Exams for the RCM.
Louisa has performed 4 successful solo piano fundraising concerts for CMC Edmonton Chapter, in addition to appearing as a piano soloist at the Winspear Centre: twice with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra and twice with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

She has been volunteering her time regularly, playing the piano and violin at the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre and the Strathcona Place Senior Centre, and at the Edmonton Canadian Blood Services. Louisa fundraised for and donated her lovely long braids twice to The Hair Massacure, supporting the Stollery Childrens Hospital Make-a-Wish Foundation. Besides her regular volunteer positions that she maintains, Louisa has volunteered at the Festival of Trees annually and she is part of the outreach team at Homeless Connect at Shaw Conference centre.  For her contributions to the community, Louisa received in 2010 the Edmonton Youth Excellence Award; the CMC Edmonton Chapter Service Award in 2014; and the ARMTA Community Service Gold Award and the AMEF Student Recognition Award in Community Service in 2016.    

Louisa is currently in her 2nd year of Honours Neuroscience at the University of Alberta is Vice President of Communication for the Neuroscience Students Association. Her strong leadership qualities, as demonstrated by involvement in extracurricular and community service led to Louisa receiving The Academic Excellence Scholarship and the William and Mary Hawrysh Memorial Leadership Scholarship from the University of Alberta. She was also selected as a Horatio Alger Scholar in Alberta, receiving the Horatio Alger Jim Pattison Alberta Scholarship, one out of only 20 students in Alberta in 2015.  She plans on integrating her musical background into her university studies. She also teaches piano and violin at her family home. Louisa likes reading, Scottish Dancing, playing mah-jong and is a diehard fan of the Edmonton Oilers.

ALBERTA WIND SYMPHONY
The ABA Wind Symphony is comprised of outstanding band students from across the province of Alberta. One of the cornerstone programs of the Alberta Band Association, through this opportunity thousands of Albertas finest music students have had the chance to grow musically and to meet and perform with their peers.

ROBERT PONTO, ABA Wind Symphony Guest Conductor

Robert Ponto is associate professor of conducting and director of bands at the University of Oregon. He conducts the Oregon Wind Ensemble, supervises the graduate program in wind conducting, and serves as coordinator of recruitment and outreach.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he received degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Prior to his appointment at the University of Oregon in 1992, Ponto held conducting/teaching posts at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, East Carolina University, Pacific Lutheran University, and in the public schools of West St. PaulMendota Heights, Minnesota.

Pontos frequent appearances as guest conductor include the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Interlochen Arts Academy Band, and numerous state and regional honor bands throughout the United States. Ponto has also earned respect as a creative and inspiring teacher of conducting, working with students throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. His ensembles have appeared at state, regional, and national MENC conferences, regional CBDNA conferences, and at the Bang On A Can contemporary music festival in New York City.

As an instrumentalist, Pontos performance credits include the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausens opera, Saturday from Light at La Scala in Milan, Italy, as well as many appearances with the Emmy Award-winning Washington Brass Quintet.
Ponto is an active member of the Music Educators National Conference and past president of the Northwest Division of College Band Directors National Association.
