Patchwork Project: A Tapestry of American Song- New York, New York
A TAPESTRY OF AMERICAN SONG
Join Patchwork Project in NYC for a one-of-a-kind recital of American music. This hour-long concert program weaves together the songs of quintessential American composers Samuel Barber, John Duke, and Leonard Bernstein with the voices of New American composers Gabriel Kahane, Mark Adamo, Jason Robert Brown, and more. This event features the world premiere of a work composed specifically for Patchwork Project by NYC-area composer, Pamela Stein Lynde.
ABOUT PATCHWORK PROJECT
Patchwork Project was founded in March 2016 by Kendra Wieneke and Will Berman. Our mission is to produce unique, audience-centered programs of art song, opera, and musical theatre that highlight the vast and varied wealth of American music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Our programs honor the lauded craft of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Samuel Barber while introducing audiences to lesser-known, but equally deserving regional and up-and-coming composers.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Will Berman, baritone, grew up in Westchester, NY and began his classical studies at age 15. He pursued undergraduate studies at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, studying under the late Rita Shane. It was at Eastman that he cultivated a great passion for song recitals. He made his operatic debut as Melisso in Handels Alcina while attending Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. His favorite roles include Papageno (The Magic Flute) and Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro). Will has also performed with Spoleto USA, Manhattan Opera Studio, Lyric Opera Studio of Weimar, and Operafestival di Roma, and can be heard in the bass section of the professional choir at the Church of Our Saviour in New York City.
Kendra Wieneke, mezzo-soprano, made her professional debut in 2013 singing the alto solos in Bachs Magnificat in D with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Her favorite roles include Anne in the collegiate premiere of Jake Heggies To Hell and Back, Bianca in The Rape of Lucretia, and as the title role in Handels Serse, in performances coached and conducted by Grammy Award-winning lutenist and leading early music expert, Paul ODette. Her appreciation for a wide range of repertoire has fueled her love for the research and crafting of song recitals, a performance medium she believes is underrepresented. She received a BM and an MM from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where she studied with Jan Opalach and Carol Webber.
Hong Kong native, Mun-Tzung Wong, the founder and director of New York Conducting Institute, is on staff at the Manhattan School of Music. A collaborative and solo pianist in New York City, she has appeared on WQXR and performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Alice Tully Hall, Steinway Hall and Lincoln Center. She has worked with maestros Kurt Masur, Philippe Entremont and George Manahan. She joined Joan Dornemann's International Vocal Arts Institute as a staff pianist two years ago. She has been engaged with St. Petersburg Opera Company in Florida as the principal coach and assistant conductor since 2015. She is the assistant conductor at New Rochelle Opera starting this June. As a teaching artist, Miss Wong maintains a private instrumental and vocal coaching studio in New York City. She has been studying conducting with maestros such as Don Schleicher, Kirk Trevor and Paul Nadler. As an emerging mezzo-soprano, she has recently appeared as a concert soloist at performances of Mozart Requiem, Mass in C minor, Vivaldi Gloria, Bach Magnificat, and Duruflé Requiem
