Brotherly Ayres and Prayers by Henry and Daniel Purcell
Internationally acclaimed countertenor Nicholas Tamagna is joined by harpsichordist and early music specialist Christine Gevert in a recital with dramatic vocal and keyboard music of the two English 17th century composers.
MUSIC BY HENRY AND DANIEL PURCELL It is lost to history whether Daniel and Henry were brothers or cousins, but their music shares a certain fraternal kinship. Both joined the Chapel Royal at age 14, both held organist positions there. While the records are vague however, it is clear upon listening to these early English composers that they share a harmonic and rhythmic language that is at once unique and complimentary to one another. This musical offering displays their genius propensity for dramatic setting of texts in the English language and their shared melancholy, harmonic wonderment, and rhythmic incisiveness.
This program features some of the well-known and loved vocal works by Henry Purcell, such as Music for a While, If music be the food of Love, Fairest Isle and Evening Hymn. Daniel Purcell's lesser known, but equally dramatic and charming ayres from his plays and operas Judgement of Paris and Achilles are Morpheus, thou gentle God and O ravishing delight from are a wonderful complement and contrast to Henry's pieces. The vocal works are connected by dance movements, grounds and toccatas for solo harpsichord by the two composers.
