Portland Flute and Guitar: Naturally Inspired - Seasons, Elements and Landscapes
Enjoy complimentary wine, cheese and chocolate as part of this intimate concert experience.

Star performers Amelia Lukas and Mario Diaz make their Portland debut as a duo, exploiting the lush timbral possibilities of the flute and guitar combination. This recital features gorgeous and diverse music inspired by nature and explores the emotion associated with extremes of the elements. The program includes rarely heard masterworks for this instrumental combination, including Terry Riley's evocative Cantos Desiertos. The collection of movements which includes Francesco en Paraiso, Quijote and Llanto, transpired in 1996, as the composer says,"during a week in Puerto Vallarta with my family. Long walks on the beach in the cool daybreak mornings, spicy food dripping with chilies in the evenings, and holing up alone in the hotel during long hot afternoons, composing when everybody else was at the beach with the grandchildren. This was an experience I would like to repeat. Toru Takemitsu's Towards the Sea (for alto flute and guitar) is a tremendous experiment in tone color and captures the tumultuous, ever changing and majestic beauty of the sea, and sea-faring lifestyle. Robert Beaser's Mountain Songs depict many aspects of Appalachian culture; with some movements stunningly beautiful and others thoroughly rambunctious, this piece is a satisfying mix of Americana and nostalgia. Also on the program are Faure's beloved Pavane, Debussy's famous flute solo Syrinx and a recent piece for solo guitar by local composer Bryan Johanson.

Flutist Amelia Lukas performs with a fine balance of virtuosity and poetry (The New York Times) and has a buoyancy of spirit that comes out in the flute, a just beautiful sound (The Boston Globe). A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music (London) and the Manhattan School of Music, this season she performs with Chamber Music Northwest, fEARnoMUSIC, and Music in the Woods. Past engagements include being a member of the American Modern Ensemble and Founder and Director of Ear Heart Music, an impressive (and) feisty contemporary-classical concert series (NY Times) "which has arrived as a major cultural resource in the city" (New York Arts). She is currently Director of Community Engagement at All Classical Portland.

Guitarist and vocalist Mario Santiago Diaz performs in a distinctive style, blending the best of Latin, classical, jazz, pop and flamenco music. A native of Oregon and of Peruvian decent, Diaz has performed across the USA and Latin America as both a soloist and chamber musician. Currently serving on the faculty of Portland State University and Portland Community College, Diaz is a member of the celebrated Portland Guitar Quartet.
