MUSICA MAESTRALE PRESENTS - IN THE MODERN STYLE
The early 17th-century was a very dynamic time for instrumental music in Italy. The older style based on the choral, polyphonic model was starting to give way to a more dramatic, rhetorical, expressive style that was highly influenced by the development of opera. Innovators of this new genre of instrumental music called it the 'Modern Style', and the ideas that were developed at this time eventually led to the establishment of the trio sonata, a form that reached its zenith later in the century by Arcangelo Corelli and others. For this exciting program featuring works by Dario Castello, Biagio Marini, and Giovanni Battista Fontana, Hideki Yamaya and Max Fuller of Musica Maestrale will be joined for the first time by Seattle virtuoso violinists Christine Beckman and Courtney Kuroda.
Hideki Yamaya (theorbo), based in Portland, Oregon, is a lutenist and guitarist who actively teaches and performs all over the West Coast. He has a B.A. in Music and an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from University of California, Santa Cruz, where he studied with Robert Strizich, and an M.F.A. in Guitar and Lute Performance from University of California, Irvine, where he studied with John Schneiderman. In demand both as a soloist and as a continuo/chamber player, Hideki has performed with and for Portland Baroque Orchestra, Portland Opera, Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Baroque Northwest, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, L.A. Master Chorale, California Bach Society.
Christine Wilkinson Beckman (baroque violin) enjoys performing throughout her native Northwest with early music ensembles large and small. She appears regularly with Early Music Underground, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and the Portland Baroque Orchestra, and she serves as principal second violin with the Seattle Baroque Orchestra. She is also the director of the New Baroque Orchestra, one of the Community Collegia of the Early Music Guild of Seattle. Other ensembles include Apollos Fire, Bach Collegium of San Diego, New York State Baroque, Pacific MusicWorks, Queen City Musicians, and the Salish Sea Early Music Festival. Christine began her studies on baroque violin with Ingrid Matthews and graduated in 2013 with an MA from the Historical Performance Practices program at Case Western Reserve University where she studied with Julie Andrijeski. She received her BM in Violin Performance from St. Olaf College.
Courtney Kuroda (baroque violin) is an active performer of early music in the Seattle area and has performed throughout the U.S. and Canada with period chamber ensembles and orchestras, including Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, Ars Antigua in Chicago, Ensemble Mirable, and Opera Lafayette in Washington D.C. Ms. Kuroda has played in the Bloomington and Boston Early Music Festivals. She received her Masters degree in performance from the Early Music Institute at Indiana University where she studied Baroque violin with Stanley Ritchie. She has recorded for the Naxos and ATMA labels, and resides in the Seattle area.
Max A. Fuller, cello, is a graduate of the Juilliard School where he studied with Claus Adam. He also studied early music in New York with Myron Lutzke and Ken Slowik. He has performed with the Phoenix Symphony on cello and was viol soloist on two occasions in the St. Matthew Passion, under James Sedaris and Herman Michael.
