Zorá String Quartet Portland Debut
Zorá String Quartet is one of the most exciting ensembles of the year. Winners of the 2015 Fischoff Competition, the most prestigious chamber competition in the US, they've taken international competitions by storm, winning the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Sander Buchman Award, the Friends of Music Concerts Prize (Connecticut), the Hayden's Ferry Chamber Music Series Prize (AZ), the Paramount Theatre Prize (VT), and the Vancouver Recital Society Prize, and they were the Coleman-Barstow Prize winner at the Coleman National Chamber Music Competition in 2015. In 2014 they were the string quartet in residence to perform and study manuscripts at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany. They certainly live up to their name (zorá being the Bulgarian word for "dawn"). Don't miss their Portland debut!
Bare and enigmatic, Stravinsky's Three Pieces are contrasting studies in popular, fantastic, and liturgical moods. Schumann's quartet No. 1 contains that transparency and elegance of Mendelssohn, his great collaborator. Debussy's string quartet has become one of the most beloved in the repertoire partly because of its stunning sensual beauty and variety of textures which Debussy manages to create with a mere four instruments.
