Voices from Chernobyl
On April 26, 2016, thirty years to the day after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, the Troika Collective is proud to present Voices from Chernobyl, a commemorative evening of music and performance. Held in remembrance of one of the most searing events of the late 20th century, Voices from Chernobyl features a special concert presentation of the Troika Collectives innovative original work for cello, accordion, guitar and voice which first premiered in 2013 (previously titled Chernobyl: the Opera) as well as performances from Vostok, an all female a cappella group specializing in music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Set to the hauntingly beautiful music of Vancouver composer Elliot Vaughan, Voices from Chernobyl tells the stories of survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown, as well as of those who have chosen to resettle in the region despite the dangers to their health. Using verbatim text taken from interviews and sung by an ensemble of seven performers, Voices from Chernobyl explores the heartbreaking yet compelling history of a nuclear disaster through movement, projections, and striking new music. The sophisticated score swaggers like a peg-legged drunk, but, at the same time, its execution is terrifically precise, the Georgia Straights Colin Thomas said of a preview version of Chernobyl: the Opera.
The Troika Collective is an emerging interdisciplinary artists collective based in Vancouver that uses Eastern European culture as a lens to explore universally resonant stories and themes.
For Voices from Chernobyl, the Troika Collective will once again be partnering with the Veronika Children Leukemia Foundation (veronikafoundation.org), an organization that assists children suffering from cancer in Eastern Europe, many of them as a result of the lingering effects of the Chernobyl disaster. A portion of the proceeds of the evening will be donated in support of this important cause.
