RANI ARBO & GREG RYAN ~ Live In The Grand Hall at WORKSHOP13 ~ Ware, MA w/Special Guest AMY PORCHELLI
Saturday, April 16, 2016 Door @ 6:30PM Show @ 7:00PM $15 Advance $18 Door
RANI ARBO, fiddler, guitarist, singer / songwriter pairs up for a rare duo show with master guitarist GREG RYAN.
RANI ARBO has toured nationally for more than 20 years with JOHN McCUTCHEON, JOAN BAEZ, MARK ERELLI, among others, and most recently with the quartet RANI ARBO and DAISEY MAYHEM. Together, they have produced five CDs on SIGNATURE SOUNDS and frequented folk festivals from coast to coast. Rani was also lead singer and fiddler in the New England based bluegrass band SALAMANDER CROSSING.
Rani grew up a cellist and chorister in New York City, where she had the opportunity to learn centuries of sacred music, from Hildegarde to Poulenc to Paul Winter. After studying geology in college, she took up fiddle and fell for the rootsy sounds of old-time, Cajun, honkytonk and bluegrass music. To the stage, she brings a warm, inviting alto and swampy fiddle style.
Acoustic Guitar Magazine writes, Arbo is blessed with an unmistakable voice, both light and sultry, with a hint of tremolo and smoke. Her songs are melodic, poetic, loving and wry reflections on motherhood, spirit, partnership, mid-life, red- haired boys, and more.
GREG RYAN is a Vermont-based guitarist and guitar teacher. Hes an accomplished performer, too, having toured for years as a singer/songwriter before forming a gypsy-jazz duo, THEY MIGHT BE GYPSIES, with his 15-year-old son, Aidan. Their two records received rave reviews, with their debut album winning the Times Argus Instrumental Album Of The Year. In addition to playing with TMBG, Greg performs with the gypsy jazz group THE QUEEN CITY HOT CLUB.
Recently, Greg has been building and playing 'Gourdtars,' an instrument of his own design, something of a cross between an old-time banjo and a Turkish Oud. He performs everything from Americana to 'improvisational gourd funk'. Greg is also a designer, inventor, builder and master-craftsman.
On the set list will be many of Arbos wry, reflective originals. Together with Ryans rich, gravelly singing and emotive, powerful guitar, this duo casts a sweet and spooky musical spell.
Singer/Songwriter, AMY PORCHELLI is a classically trained pianist and guitar player. In addition to being a soloist, Amy also performs as vocalist, guitarist and pianist with her brother, Aaron (guitar) and David Lynch (keyboard) in THE PLAAD BAND formed in 2008. Amy has also performed as lead vocalist/songwriter with SOLOTURN an original classical rock ensemble with Paula Trebra (violin). Amy is also active in the theater. Amys past performances include supporting role as Maria Alena in THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, the leading role as Skye Holling in Dan Eatons original Rock & Roll Musical, ANTHEM and vocalist in TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE at the Majestic Theater in West Springfield, MA.
