Panama Hotel Jazz at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
On March 30, 1942, Japanese Americans were removed from Bainbridge Island as a military reaction to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. To commemorate that event, the Steve Griggs Ensemble will perform Panama Hotel Jazz: Music Made from Memories at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
Panama Hotel Jazz: Music Made from Memories is a 75-minute program of music and narration that tells the history of Seattle's Panama Hotel and the building's significance in the Japanese American community, especially during WWII incarceration. Eight narrations tell the story of Japanese immigrant esthetics, American discrimination against Asians, Nihonmachi prosperity before 1940, connection of Nihonmachi with Seattle's jazz scene, links to the novel "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," destruction of cultural treasures before FBI interrogations on Bainbridge and Vashon Islands, desolate location of concentration camps, endurance embodied in the Japanese national anthem, the Selective Service Loyalty Questionnaire, owners of the Panama Hotel returning to Seattle from Minidoka, positive lessons from surviving incarceration, investing in future generations and redress. The nine original music compositions abstract these themes and provide structures for improvisation by the Steve Griggs Ensemble consisting of Jay Thomas - trumpet, Steve Griggs - saxophone, Susan Pascal - vibraphone, Milo Petersen - guitar, and Phil Sparks - bass.
This program was commissioned by 4Culture and won the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Adventurous Programming Award of Contemporary Music in 2013 and 2015. This performance is supported by 4Culture, the National Park Service, and Earshot Jazz.
