The UC Alumni Chorus, conducted by Dr. Mark Sumner, presents an April concert inspired by powerful stories of immigration. Many of our country's roots were established by the millions of immigrants who sought a better life, which in turn has shaped the US of A into a colorful, diverse and beautiful country. Our programme is dedicated to the many people throughout the world seeking refuge, fleeing terrible political and religious situations. The concert features The Golden Door, a cantata based on archives of interviews with immigrants who passed through Ellis Island, composed by Ronald Perera. The southern and western immigration flow is reflected in the "Olive Tree" from China and "En El Principio" (a text mixing Spanish and English exploring how a community supports and nourishes an individual, even as the individual inspires the community.) Other songs, by illustrious American Composers, themselves immigrants, resonate with the immigrant's struggle to leave their homeland and make a journey to an unknown land. Join us in embracing our multi-cultural backgrounds and honoring the people who have come before, or are on their way.
