CRAZY COLD BEAUTIFUL The John Beargrease Song Cycle by Robin Eschner - 2014 McKnight Foundation Visiting Composer with the American Composers Forum.
CRAZY COLD BEAUTIFUL is a song cycle about the history and culture of sled dog mushing in northern Minnesota. The composition is inspired by the contributions of 19th century Ojibwe mail carrier, John Beargrease, who worked with his sled dogs to deliver the mail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais during winter months from 1880 to 1900, and by the spirit of the annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. The 17 songs in the cycle were composed by Robin Eschner, 2014 McKnight Foundation Visiting Composer with the American Composers Forum. They include settings of words gathered from Minnesota mushers, sled builders and historians, and from people connected to the annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, including ham radio operators, race volunteers, judges, veterinarians, and handlers. Several of the songs are settings of journal entries and letters written during the years John Beargrease was delivering mail. This folk music influenced song cycle includes a combination of ensemble pieces that will be performed by Take Jack, and songs for full chorus that will include Sonoma County's Kitchen Choir, directed by Sarah Saulsbury. Take Jack is a dynamic Sonoma County collaborative ensemble devoted to the performance of original arrangements and compositions. The nine members of Take Jack: Clare Broussard, JT Devine, Robin Eschner, Bill Horvitz, Dennis Hysom, Shari Kovner, Chris Smith, Mike VanDordrecht and Gene Wright. Additional musicians joining the concerts: Steve Adams, Cory Wright, Kyle Bruckman, John Tuttle, Oliver Tuttle, John Bidwell, Philip Beard, Sarah Zaharako, Katie Harlow and Joseph Sabella. Award-winning Bay Area composer, orchestral conductor, multi-instrumentalist, revered educator and stellar photographer Omid Zoufonoun, will conduct the concert.
