How Music Tells Its Story
The concert opens with music arranged by the great 19th century German composer Johannes Brahms. When he was young, he loved to play piano, accompanying a violinist in concerts that included arrangements of Hungarian dance music. We'll hear one of his favorites that he arranged for Orchestra. We'll follow that with some instrument demonstrations for everyone to get acquainted, after which we'll then put four of those instruments on display having a "conversation" (and telling their "story") in a work by the classical Austrian composer, Franz Josef Haydn. The last pieces before intermission are four short pieces by French composer Georges Bizet in which each have their own "character" (not person, but style); and finally, after intermission, we'll really tell a story as Sondra Hayes, our award winning story teller (who plays violin in the Phil), narrates to music that describes the book "The Story of Babar" by French author Jean de Brunhoff, with music by French composer Francis Poulenc. So, we hope you will enjoy the Philharmonic's musical universe here at the Athenaeum, as we show how music can tell a story!
Soloists for Haydn: Sarah Binford, cello; Jonathan Johnson, violin; Lee Jones, oboe; Paul Norby, bassoon
