June Millington at TreeCat Cafe
June Millington performs at the new youth-run TreeCat Café on Thursday September 17, 2015 at 6:30 pm at the Treehouse Community Center, 1 Treehouse Circle Easthampton, MA.
June Millington is a Filipina-American guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and educator who is best known as co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny. Millington is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) in Goshen, MA, a nonprofit teaching, performing, and recording studio that supports women and girls in music and the music industry.
Fanny was the first all-female rock band to be signed with and to record a full album with a major label. They eventually released five albums and achieved two Billboard top 40 singles in the early 1970's. Members of the band are considered pioneers of women's rock who forged the way for other all-women rock groups like The Go-Go's, The Runaways, and The Bangles who came after. Fanny fan, David Bowie referred to Fanny as "extraordinary... they're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever."
Stephanny Marryshow, a singer songwriter who is an Institute of Musical Arts alum and June Millington's former music student, and a Treehouse Community resident, will open the evening with a few of her original songs.
The TreeCat Café is a new a monthly cafe and performance venue run by youth at the Treehouse Community, a unique inter-generational community designed to support families who are fostering and adopting children from the foster care system. Elders also live in the community and support the success and well-being of Treehouse youth by providing mentorship and assistance.
The TreeCat Café provides high school and college-aged youth at Treehouse with work experience, and serves as a business training ground for budding entrepreneurs. Youth are in charge of every aspect of the café: business planning, branding, marketing, budgeting and accounting, inventory and shopping, cooking and serving, and hosting the Cafe. Local business owners and elders of the Treehouse Community train and mentor youth in business and entrepreneurial skills.
Admission to the performance is a suggested donation of $20 for the general public and $5 for Treehouse Community members. Donations collected will help to fund and sustain the TreeCat Café and other youth programs at Treehouse. Food will be provided. Reservations are REQUIRED.
