The Contest Between Harmony and Invention
October 25, 2015
3:00pm
Featuring KS ensemble soloists Laura Reid, Steve Lubiarz and Diane Lane performing some of the lesser known Vivaldi concerti from the Red Priest's Op.8 (from which his Four Seasons are drawn), the Sinfonia presents a concert of repertoire that spans the ages.  We are excited to present the work of videogame composer Austin Wintory  his "Apotheosis" from the breakout hit game "Journey", Estonian minimalist Arvo Part's "Orient and Occident", and Franz Schreker's sublime "Intermezzo."

Memories of the Old World
February 21, 2016
3:00pm
The Sinfonia presents repertoire spanning nations and time periods, featuring flautist Jiajia Li and Bulgarian accordionist Konstantin Bozhinov. We bring to you Piazzolla's 5 Tango Sensations for accordion and string orchestra, Vivaldi's "La Tempesta di Mare" flute concerto, Mendelssohn's String Symphony in B-flat and an eclectic mix of traditional musical snapshots of distant homelands.

Tilting against Windmills
May 15, 2016
3:00pm
Kensington Sinfonia will proudly present the winner of our annual student Concerto Competition. This young performer will be featured on a diverse program including American minimalist composer John Adams' "Shaker Loops", and Syrian composer and violinist Maias Alyamani's "Sea Waves."  We conclude the season with selections from Telemann's masterful suite "Burlesque de Quixotte", bringing to life the stories of humor, adventure and romance from the famous "Ingenious, Low-Born Noble, Don Quixote of La Mancha."

Subscriptions may be purchased with credit card or PayPal.  However, donations may only be purchased with PayPal.  If you wish to pay for your subscription via credit card but still make a donation, we welcome you to make a donation separately via PayPal, by mailing a cheque, or in person at a concert.  All donations above $20 will be reciprocated with a charitable tax receipt.

The Kensington Sinfonia was founded in 1988 by John Lowry, Associate Concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic, and freelance musicians. In 1993 Edmond Agopian was appointed Music Director of this unique professional ensemble in Calgary, and served until 2006 when the position was given to Donovan Seidle.

Sinfonia's programs cover a wide range of chamber music and string orchestra repertoire, from the Baroque to present day. Since its inception, it has frequently commissioned works by Calgary composers, as well as presenting the Calgary premieres of many Canadian compositions. The Sinfonia has been frequently broadcast on both regional and national CBC Radio programs. It's debut recording "Views from the Americas", recorded by CBC Radio, has also been broadcast often.

The musical intimacy between players and the audience is extremely important in Sinfonia's performances. It is with this in mind that the Sinfonia chooses to perform at the wonderfully intimate and acoustically satisfying Hope Lutheran Church.

And of course, there is always a complimentary reception after each concert.
