Choral Arts | the little match girl passion
"I wanted to tell a story." This is how David Lang described his intention when composing the Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio "the little match girl passion" (2008). The work has been described as "breathtakingly spare and icily gorgeous" in spite of its minimalist construction and dark surface narrative, the result is a surprisingly lush retelling of the beloved Hans Christian Anderson tale. The program also features the opening movement from Ildrebrando Pizzetti's Messa di Requiem (1922-23) and Jake Runestad's beautiful And So I Go On (2014); pieces that, like the Lang, seek to transform grief into a tribute to love.
