Tim Weed and the Modern Mandolin Quartet
TIM WEED and The MODERN MANDOLIN QUARTET join forces to present an evening of unforgettable Crossover Classical music. Point Reyes resident Tim Weed is praised internationally for his original classical compositions for the 5-string banjo - his tone is rich and warm, reminiscent of the harp, piano, and even the sitar. These compositions reflect baroque, romantic, chromatic, modern, Spanish, French, Russian, and exotic influences which take you on an emotional voyage into the private world of this virtuoso musician. His recordings are regularly featured on National Public Radio and he has performed at chamber music festivals worldwide including a special invitation to perform for the Dalai Lama. Recipients of multiple prestigious awards and grants, the MODERN MANDOLIN QUARTET appears on 20 albums including 15 major label releases. They have been featured at Carnegie Hall, Wolf Trap, and on many prestigious international stages. The've appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, Lonesome Pine Special, and onstage with Edgar Meyer, Ransom Wilson, and Sam Bush. The Quartet was formed in 1985 by Mike Marshall and Dana Rath following the American tradition of the mandolin orchestras and chamber groups from the early twentieth century. Using the instruments of the mandolin family which correspond to the conventional string quartet (two mandolins, mandola, and mandocello), the group performs a variety of music from the great classical composers as well as commissioned original pieces. This concert will present works by Mendelssohn, Villa-Lobos, Dvorak, Copland, Gershwin, Phillip Glass and Bill Monroe, performed by Adam Roszkiewiscz on Mandocello, Paul Binkley on Mandola, and Dana Rath and Matt Flinner playing Mandolins.
