Gamelan Sekar Jaya Music and Dance of BALI
Gamelan Sekar Jaya performs at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center's Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival. Led by renowned Master Balinese Artist I DEWA PUTU BERATA, Sekar Jaya features two large percussion orchestrasthe sweet and shimmering bronze Gamelan Angklung, a twenty-person ensemble which traditionally accompanies temple ceremonies and cremation rituals in Bali; and Gamelan Jegog, a seventeen-person ensemble featuring giant bamboo marimbas with tubes up to eight feet long, noted for its rhythmic energy and exuberance. Each ensemble will be accompanied by the dynamic and dramatic flare of Balinese dance, led by Balinese artist NI LUH ESTITI ANDARAWATI.
We invite the audience to enjoy the complex interlocking rhythms and virtuosic ensemble sensibility of Balinese gamelan, and the myriad expressions and delicate hand and eye motions of Balinese dance.
